Key Installation Considerations for Non-Infill Artificial Turf: Ensuring Performance and Longevity

Non-infill artificial turf simplifies installation by eliminating the need for quartz sand or rubber infill, but it demands higher standards for base preparation and laying precision. To guarantee optimal performance and lifespan, attention to the following critical steps is essential:

I. Base Layer Preparation: The Core of Turf Stability

Flatness Requirements

  • The base surface must meet a standard of ≤3mm error when measured with a 3-meter straightedge. This prevents uneven stress on the turf, which could cause bulging over time.
  • For concrete bases: Allow at least 28 days of curing to ensure full solidification.
  • For asphalt bases: Ensure no cracks or oil stains, with a compaction density of ≥95%.
  • A drainage slope of 2‰–5‰ is mandatory (especially for outdoor venues) to avoid waterlogging. Drainage outlets should be positioned away from turf edges to prevent base erosion.

Cleaning and Drying the Base

  • Thoroughly remove dust, gravel, oil, and debris from the base surface. High-pressure washing followed by air-drying is recommended, ensuring the base moisture content is ≤8%. This can be verified via the plastic sheet test: no condensation under the sheet after 24 hours.
  • Fill any cracks with specialized repair compounds to prevent future turf tearing.

II. Pre-Installation Preparation

Turf Inspection and Storage

  • Check that all turf rolls match in model, specification, and color to avoid . For consistency, use rolls from a single production batch; different batches may have slight variations.
  • Store turf rolls flat in a cool, ventilated area, avoiding direct sunlight or heavy pressure (which can deform fibers). Storage duration should not exceed 30 days.
  • Unroll the turf and let it acclimate on the base for ≥24 hours to release transport-related tension, minimizing post-installation shrinkage.

Cutting and Layout Planning

  • Design the layout to minimize seams (more seams reduce flatness and durability). Prioritize full-roll installation, with 5–10cm of excess edge for trimming.
  • Use specialized utility knives or turf cutters for straight, clean cuts to prevent fiber loss. For curved cuts, mark outlines with chalk and cut slowly along the lines.

III. Installation and Securing: Ensuring Flatness and Wrinkle-Free Results

Installation Sequence and Direction

  • Lay turf in a uniform direction to avoid light-reflection-induced color differences. Align adjacent edges with ≤2mm tolerance.
  • For large areas, start from the center and work outward. Secure the middle first, then stretch toward the edges to prevent shifting.

Seam Handling

  • Separate fibers along adjacent edges to expose the backing. Use specialized seam tape (width ≥20cm) and eco-friendly polyurethane adhesive.
  • Apply adhesive evenly to the tape (1–2mm thickness), let it dry for 10–15 minutes (until tack-free), then bond the edges. Roll with a ≥50kg roller to eliminate air bubbles and ensure tight adhesion.
  • Allow ≥24 hours for the adhesive to fully cure before proceeding with final securing.

Edge Securing

  • Secure edges with 10–15cm U-nails (spaced 20–30cm) or aluminum edging. Tension the turf tightly during securing to prevent loosening.
  • For sloped areas, add extra fasteners on downhill edges to resist gravitational sliding.

IV. Finishing Touches and Quality Inspection

Fiber Grooming

  • After installation, use a specialized turf brush or stiff bristle brush to groom fibers in their natural direction, restoring flattened areas for uniform appearance.
  • Trim excess fibers along seams carefully to maintain flatness.

Inspection Standards

  • Flatness: ≤5mm error over 3 meters.
  • Seam Strength: ≥2N/cm in peel tests (measured with a tension meter).
  • Drainage: No standing water after 30 minutes of sprinkling.
  • Fiber Integrity: Randomly test 10 fiber clusters; each must withstand ≥15N of pull without breakage or detachment.

V. Special Considerations for Specific Scenarios

  • Outdoor Venues: Install perimeter drainage ditches to prevent water backflow. Near trees, regularly remove leaves and fruits to avoid backing contamination from rotting organic matter.
  • Sports Fields (e.g., soccer, tennis): Post-installation, test shock absorption (≥50% impact absorption) to meet safety standards. Use specialized adhesive for field markings (e.g., sidelines, penalty areas) to prevent peeling.
  • Children’s Play Areas: Use elastic underlays (e.g., EPDM granules) to reduce fall impact. Ensure U-nails are fully embedded to avoid skin scratches.

By following these steps, non-infill artificial turf can deliver superior durability, safety, and aesthetics, making it ideal for diverse applications from playgrounds to sports facilities.
